Verizon Samsung Omnia II impressions by Engadget

samsung omnia II review

When the Omnia II first appeared on our radar, two things caught our attention: TouchWiz 2.0 and Windows Mobile 6.5. To be honest, neither of these items really piqued our interest: we knew what to expect from WinMo and had serious reservations about Samsung’s latest and greatest UI. That said, we were more than willing to suspend judgement until we saw her in action. With bullet points that include a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 800MHz processor, and 8GB storage (before you even get to your microSD card), one could honestly hold out hope for a pretty decent product. Did the handset make for a satisfying, well-rounded smartphone? Or did it just find new ways of repeating the same old errors? You’ll have to read on to find out.

Physical build

Opening the product box we’re greeted by an uncluttered, some might even say “stylish” (though not us) handset. A little taller than your iPhone 3GS, although a shade thinner and narrower, the plastic is solid (doesn’t feel like a toy), the silver running ’round the edges tasteful and understated, and the little bit of texture encompassing the handset buttons stands out and feels pleasant to the touch, unlike a similar (but less obvious) treatment on Sammy’s Behold II. Also unlike the Behold II, this guy gets away with three front facing buttons (two handset controls and a center button select) to the Behold II’s seven. Along the side lay the camera shutter button, lock / unlock button, and micro-USB port. On the backside we see an understated and easy to ignore red and black checkered finish, 5 megapixel camera, and a camera flash. Also included along the top, as one would expect, is a stylus.

Samsung Omnia II Review

samsung omnia II review

The Samsung Omnia II is the newest smartphone offered by Verizon Wireless. It has a few standout components, such as a 3.7-inch, WVGA, AM-OLED screen and a 5.0 megapixel camera/camcorder with flash, some new technology such as the Swype keyboard, and the usual features today’s consumers have come to expect, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

It is available now for $200 with a two-year contract and a $100 mail-in rebate.

BUILD & DESIGN

When I took the Omnia II out of the box, the first word that came to mind was “sexy” — this really is a nice looking device. It’s a little on the large side compared to other phones, but that’s due to the 3.7-inch, AM-OLED screen, which is absolutely gorgeous. The overall design is sleek and modern, mainly black with chrome accents on the buttons and hematite around the edges of the device.

Samsung Omnia II for VerizonThe battery cover on the back is basically black, but it has really cool red accents that show up more depending on how they catch the light. It’s a subtle effect, nothing too over-the-top or cheesy, but just different enough to set the Omnia II apart from the crowd of similar-looking devices. The top of the back panel is where you’ll find the lens for the 5.0 megapixel camera with flash and video capture capabilities.

Samsung Flight is a simple touch QWERTY with hidden social powers

samsung flight review

AT&T’s simpler new touchscreen, full QWERTY slider offers a surprising range of social and fun features at a low price. Will this phone take off? Find out in our hands-on look at the Samsung Flight

The Samsung Flight on AT&T steps in where the Samsung Propel might have left off, but it’s available for less cash at launch and comes with upgraded features in almost every way. It’s a step down from the almost-smartphone aspirations of a more feature-rich phone like the Samsung Mythic, but the hardware is mostly solid and the Samsung Flight can be likeable in surprising ways, especially in terms of Web browsing and social networking.

In terms of features, the Samsung Flight might be a step up from the last generation of vertically-sliding QWERTY phones, but it’s still decidedly low-end. The camera around back is a 2-megapixel shooter that’s supposed to have auto focus, but we didn’t find it. The touchscreen display is also a novelty on a device in this form.

Samsung CorbyTXT B3210 Review

samsung corby txt review

Undeniably, the Samsung Star S5230 has been a pretty successful device so far with total sales of over 10mln units. With the release of the Corby S3650 this fall, the manufacturer took another step on the path to conquering the market of affordable handsets with a cell phone aimed at people that normally remain out of the spotlight – the young. The device won over quite a few hearts and naturally, the manufacturer didn’t linger over its decision to come up with new members of the Corby family. Most of them are targeted at people who prefer texting to verbal means of communication, not to mention the former option is all the rage these days.

Video Review of Samsung Behold 2

Phonedog has published a video review of the Samsung Behold 2 and let me tell you – that was one hell of a painful video (for Samsung) to watch. Sure, the phone *looks* nice but to at least one reviewer.. is a disaster.

John went out of his way to repeatedly point out what he hates about the phone (which is appreciated, keep it up!). Check the video out for yourself but here is a little preview of what he says.

samsung behold II review

It was but a year ago that Samsung graced us with the original Behold. At the time it was more or less positioned to win the hearts of folks who wanted a luscious touchscreen but had no real truck with smartphones. So what do we have here? With the Behold II, the company has switched things up a bit: instead of a respectable feature phone, you not only get Android 1.5, but a 3.5mm headphone jack and WiFi as well.

samsung s7070 review

In order to achieve their ambition of being the No. 1 handset manufacturer in the world, It seems that Samsung are determined to keep on producing high quality touch screen devices, to flood the market with their products, so whatever you are looking for, prepay, contract, low, mid or high use, there will be a Samsung device to suit your needs.

The Samsung S7070 is another in this long line of Samsung touchscreen handsets, sporting a large, 3.0 inch TFT resistive display, supporting up to 256,000 colours and with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. The S7070 runs the eye catching TouchWiz UI, which offers a smooth, flowing menu system, which is easy to navigate and logically laid out. Samsung like to use colourful icons, which present well on their TFT displays, and the TouchWiz UI lends itself well to this. From the main screen it will be possible to populate the display with a variety of widget style shortcuts which are ordinarily hidden from view on a slide out menu taskbar.

Samsung Pixon 12 Hands on Video

What are you expecting when you cross the Samsung Pixon with the Samsung Jet and throw in a 12 megapixelled digital camera while you’re at it? You get Samsung’s newest Pixon 12! In my opinion, this is the Samsung Pixon the way it should have been from the start, as far as usability is concerned.

TouchWiz 2.0, insane camera, for a non-smartphone, what’s there not to love? If you ask me? I think Samsung still needs to work on their on-screen keyboard. What does this phone mean to you? Why don’t you watch this episode of Gear65 and let us know if you like what you see!
