Swype, a Seattle-based company that develops a new way of typing on touchscreen displays, has secured a $5.6 million funding from Nokia and Samsung (via the companies’ subsidiaries Nokia Growth Partners and Samsung Ventures, respectively).
Reportedly, Swype allows users to write “over 40 words per minute on touchscreen devices” by intelligently guessing the words you want to type, and the new funding will further help it improve its technology.
For the moment, only one handset features Swype’s technology (Verizon’s Omnia II), but Swype plans to offer it to several other WM and Android smartphones next year – and maybe to Nokia’s touchscreen handsets, too.

Another Samsung Solar-Powered phone has got an official name. No, it is not the budget phone Samsung E1107. This one is the Samsung Blue Earth, the solar powered Samsung phone that was introduced back in February 09.
Anyway, the Samsung Blue Earth’s official name is Samsung S7750. That being said, here are several features related to the green side of the Samsung S7750 Blue Earth:
- 1 hour of solar charging gets you 10 minutes of talk or 2 days of standby
- Touchscreen
- Solar panel
- Front and rear facing cameras
- Eco-walk – essentially a pedometer that calculates how far you’ve walked and determines how much carbon you are saving by not driving
- The handset housing is made from recyclable plastics, owing to its eco-friendly roots
Our source is saying that we might be able to see the Samsung Blue Earth S7750 on the street later this year. So let’s cross your fingers with me, earth lovers

Ok now that the Samsung Reclaim -claimed as a green phone with nice features- will arrive a few days from now, it is about time for someone to start talking about the performance of the Reclaim. And it seems that our folks at MobileCrunch has done that. They also have several arguable statements on the Green-ness of the phone. Read on to find out more.
Our folks said that :
- the fact that the phone is manufactured and shipped from Korea makes this phone has burned up many fuels in the shipping process
- Five pamphlets. 100 pages of extra stuffs that most people won’t read. Those information should be stored in the SD card to save paper, ink (even though they’re made from recycled materials), and time and energy
- The box is too huge and too much empty spaces (also caused by the 5 pamphlets)
Ok so let’s discussed this
Do you agree?

(this above is the Innov8, slightly photoshopped)
The next round of MP camera phones race is on start, and Samsung is making a dash right from the start. At the Mobile World Congress ’09 on 16th this month they plan to bring 12 MP Beast into play, while the US carriers are still battling to be the first with an 8-megapixel shooter on their shelves.
Samsung was the first vendor to bring out an 8MP camera phone (the Innov8, which was launched just one month before Sony Ericsson’s C905), and it will likely be the first to announce and launch a 12MP handset too. It’s said that Samsung plans to begin mass production before the end of February, with the intention of releasing it in Europe first. Previous reports said that Samsung also wants to produce an 8MP phone with 3x optical zoom. So there won’t be any surprise if we also see that at MWC 2009, alongside the 12MP handset.
We heard that Sony had some cameraphone-ready 12 megapixel CMOS sensors back in last year—which they will hopefully be set up on phone by March, and Samsung might have similar sensors prepped and packed inside some hardware by now.

The miniaturization trend continues… . This time, Samsung Techwin announces world’s smalles 8MP camera modules for phones, which it aims to mass-produce soon. According to the company, its 8.3mm thick camera module is 40% smaller than currently existing products, measuring 8.5mm by 8.5mm in size. This ought to pave the way for uber-sexy, RAZR-like 8-megapixel cameraphones in the future.
So while you already have phones that are thinner than ever, expect them to shed even more millimeters as time progresses, even though they keep gaining better features by the pocket-load. Those 8-megapixel camera phones with bad-ass optical zoom will become sexy in the future.
